To mark the 90th anniversary of the Habimah Theatre, the Festival is dedicating a series of events to the production most identified with the country's national theatre
TR Warszawa
By S. Ansky and Hanna Krall
Directed and adapted by Krzysztof Warlikowski
The play merges Ansky's "The Dybbuk" with an adaptation of a short story by Hanna Krall about an American man tormented by the spirit of his half-brother who was killed in the Warsaw ghetto. Unlike Ansky's tale, in Krall's story the protagonist is loathe to rid himself of the spirit in order to keep the memory of the Holocaust and pre-war Jewish culture in Poland alive.
One of the most prominent directors of his generation in Europe today, Krzysztof Warlikowski, a student of Peter Brook, has directed many plays and operas around the world. TR Warszawa is a relatively young theatre company whose artistic director Grzegorz Jarzyna regularly provides opportunities for young directors and for innovative projects. Israeli actress Orna Porat also performs in the show, and the lighting designer is another Israeli - Felice Ross.
"TR Warszawa acts with assurance, having no problem projecting emotions across the language barrier due to the impressive acting talent of the cast." The New York Times
"The Dybbuk's cutting, honest voice represents the voice of the second generation of the Holocaust, who did not experience the horrors themselves yet still feel haunted by it." Gazeta Wyborcza

Conceived by Renana Raz and Ofer Amram
Choreographer Renana Raz and actor Ofer Amram create and evening of dance-theatre dealing with the dybbuk myth - "the world above", "between two worlds" and "the world below". These worlds converge inasmuch as "the world below" struggles to raise itself to "the world above", and "the world above" is often occupied with "the world below" - as with the dead bride and groom buried in the synagogue graveyard from Ansky's "Dybbuk". At the same time as the living fear "the world below", they are also drawn towards it and seek it out.

A musical-theatrical performance
Director: Seung Whan Song
For those who really like action in the kitchen and even believe that the television shows "Battle of the Knives" and "The Kitchen" are the ultimate in creativity, think again and revert to the Korean original. Originally called "Nanta", the play has been running for over 10 years and has enthralled more audiences than any other show in Korea.
On the stage, in an authentic professional kitchen, a team of chefs are called on to prepare an elaborate banquet. While cooking they turn all kinds of kitchen utensils - knives, pots, plates, even brooms and each other - into percussion instruments through which the audience is exposed to traditional Korean drum rhythms. This is a humorous, non-verbal play which culminates in a feast which is shared with the audience.
Fans of Stomp and Mayumana will get a delicious and savoury extension of the drumming genre they adore.
"Great fun, presented by a lively and engaging cast which make dicing (and drumming) with ultra-sharp knives look easy. Even so, not a recipe to try at home!" The Herald

National Theatre, Warsaw
By Witold Gombrowicz Director: Jerzy Jarocki
The National Theatre of Warsaw is appearing in the Festival for the first time with a play by Gombrowicz, one of the great Polish playwrights, nominated for the Nobel Prize. This is a detective story about a bizarre investigation in which the "culprit" turns out to be man's instinctive search for order and meaning in life. The play recounts the story of two young men who become mixed up in a strange incident on the way to a guesthouse in a Polish resort town run by an extremely weird family. The play is intended to expose the mockery of human existence.
The National Theatre of Warsaw, established in 1765, is one of the oldest theatres in the world. Director Jerzy Jarocki is one of the most important directors in Poland who is regularly invited to direct in other countries.
In order to permit the staging of the play, the auditorium will be "remodeled".
"Cosmos is Jarocki's most successful work. In his excellent presentation, the complex novel transforms itself into a clear and logic tale and a profound experience." Rzeczpospolita Daily
"An extraordinary production and amazing experience." Teatr Poland

Marking the 110th year since Emile Zola wrote "J'accuse"

By Pierrette Dupoyet
Director: Stephane Russel
The Dreyfus Affair is more or less familiar to every Israeli citizen. But do we know anything about the man himself and what he underwent during the affair? From his prison cell on Devil's Island, actor David Arveiller reconstructs, in fragments, the episodes and moments in the Dreyfus affair. This reconstruction is like painstaking detective work carried out in a labyrinth of hate, anti-Semitism, cunning and anger, which made Dreyfus their victim. The play evokes the paneling of walls, the tatters of history and the ink blotches which contributed to forge the story of one man. Perrine Dauger acts alongside Arveiller.
"David Arveiller is all the more convincing in his performance as we never imagined the frail captain having such stalwart traits." Le Figaro

"I Am Not Dreyfus" is a dramatic penetrating look into the colorful and intriguing soul of the anti-Semitic French military commander Ferdinand Esterhazy, responsible for the famous affair. In a poignant confession, full of humor, the play exposes the treacherous and divided soul of the supreme Jew-hater as it has never been presented before. The play, which premiered in 2007, is being performed as part of an evening on The Dreyfus Affair, and will be followed by a stimulating discussion on anti-Semitism from a historical point of view until the present day.

Licedei Clown Theatre

Artistic Director: Boris Petrushansky
"The Licedei Theatre from Russia is an amazing troupe which cannot be defined by standard means" is how the theatre critic of Le Parisien described this company founded in 1968 by Slava Polunin the clown.
In its new format, the company has staged, among other works, this entertaining production, suitable for both parents and children (over 8). The play is a crazy family portrait - an alcoholic father, an ever-pregnant mother, and their brood of hyperactive offspring continually threatening acts of violence against mum and dad as punishment for their faults. Naturally, everything ends well in this irresistable performance which combines clowning, pantomime, a pillow fight with the audience, sloshed water, and many other surprises - and all without words.
"It is rare to see a performance in which the whole family has fun, both the kids and the parents. A must see." Le Quotidien

In a development town by the sea shore one moon-lit night, students from the same graduate class - a typical Israeli class - meet after 30 years. A migrant orchestra which plays dance music, a singer who sings hypnotic songs and characters who commence a revealing journey to discover who they once were and what they have become are part of this school reunion, which is also a surprise party. The group dances the rondo, a circle dance, with recurring steps which symbolize the consolidation of the group, their happiness and strength. However, during the dance the cards are reshuffled and the inner secrets below the bogus surface of success are revealed.
