Jordi Savall and H?sperion XXI - A special event of Jewish Renaissance Music

Music Director: Jordi Savall
With: Montserrat Figueras, vocals Pierre Hamon, flutes Jordi Savall, lyre, vielle, rebab Yair Dalal, oud Begonia Olavide, harp Dimitri Psonis, medieval guitar, santur David Mayoral, percussion

One of Jordi Savall's best known and most successful albums is dedicated to the music of the Jews who were expelled form Spain in the 15th century. Savall has researched and collected musical traditions which were handed down from mother to daughter and father to son for hundreds of years, and which accompanied some of the exiled families to their homes in the new world. In the concert the ensemble will play tunes and songs from Morocco, Sarajevo, Sophia, Salonika, Turkey, Rhodes, Alexandria and Jerusalem. This is a rare opportunity to hear the Judeo-Espagnol heritage, as it has been preserved over the centuries, in a performance by one of the leading early music ensembles in the world.

Accordone

Italy

אנסמבל אקורדונה

Via Toledo

Marco Beasley: tenor
Pino de Vittorio, vocals and battente guitar
Musical director, organ & harpsichord: Guido Morini

Stefano Rocco, lute, baroque guitar Fabio Accurso, lute Franco Paravan, theorbo (bass lute) Mario Durante, percussions

This excellent period music ensemble will perform Renaissance and Baroque vocal music from southern Italy, only a small part of which is familiar to Israelis as "Neapolitan songs". In this concert, Accordone performs folk songs from southern Italy - traditional songs which have been handed down from generation to generation by the farming families who lived in the region. Over the years, the ensemble has researched the origins of the songs, which are influenced by music of the northern Mediterranean basin. They will be performing the works on authentic period instruments with a theatrical approach, characteristic of the traveling minstrels of yesteryear. Southern Italy was ruled by Spain for 300 years from the 16th century onwards, and one of the main boulevards of Naples is still named Via Toledo after the Spanish viceroy Don Pedro di Toledo.
""Marco Beasley's singing is like breathing - natural and flowing. His diction is clear and precise, and he transforms every vocal work into an opulent theatrical experience." Le Figaro

The Juilliard String Quartet is arriving in Israel with two different programs including works of 20th century composers alongside more classical ones. According to the Los Angeles Times music critic "The Juilliard String Quartet remains the standard by which all other quartets must be judged." The year 2007 marked the 60th year since the foundation of the quartet whose members are all teachers at the prestigious Julliard School in New York. In the first concert, the quartet will be performing a composition by American composer Elliot Carter who is celebrating his 100th birthday this year. Carter's compositions are rarely performed in Israel, despite his being recognized as one of the leading American composers of the 20th century.

"The Juilliard Quartet continues to amaze with the freshness and intensity it invariably brings to its vast repertoire." New York Times

תכנית:
Brahms "Song of Destiny" op. 54
Szymanowski "Song of the Night" (Israeli premiere)
Mahler "Das klagende Lied" (Israeli premiere)

Mahler considered his "Klagende Lied" (song of lamentation), which he began writing at the age of 18, as the moment when he established himself as a composer. The work has never before been performed in Israel. The program also includes "Song of the Night", the third symphony by one of the great 20th century Polish composers, Karol Szymanowski. The work was written to a text by the Persian sufi mystic, Djalal al'Din Ruimi, and is characterized by a fusion of western and eastern music styles. "Song of Destiny", which is opening the program, is a lesser known work of Brahms which deals with man's impotence in face of his destiny.
